Class Level Descriptions: Beginner (Level 1): These classes are designed for beginning belly dancers and no prior dance experience is required. The class introduces the building blocks of Middle Eastern dance, including break down of basic movements, work on muscle isolations, dance conditioning, and dance combinations. Most students will need at least two sessions--either Beginner and Advanced Beginner or two Level 1 classes--to master the basics and be ready to move on to Level 2 material.
Advanced Beginner (Level 1+): This class is specially geared toward students who have had some introduction to belly dance, and are working at mastering the building blocks of the dance. The content of this class is similar to that of Level I, but it moves more quickly, with more attention to detail, technique, variations, basic choreography, and building comfort with finger cymbals.
Intermediate (Levels 2 - 2+): Students should have prior exposure to Middle Eastern dance (completion of at least two sessions of dance-any combination of Beginner or Advanced Beginner classes-is typically recommended.) The class focuses on technique mastery, new techniques, variations, and combinations. There will some simple layering of movements, and we will prepare a group choreography. Some specialty techniques are also introduced at this level.
Advanced Intermediate (Level 3 and ongoing): For dancers who have mastered the fundamental tools of the dance and basic zill patterns introduced in levels 1 and 2. This class introduces new finger cymbal patterns and new technique variations, with increasing focus on layered movements, combinations, style, presentation, and improvisational skill development. Some specialty techniques are also introduced.
Other Programs with Ammala Instructors The classes below are not run through the Ammal School, but by Community Education or other institutions.
